The Quick Reaction Podcast

The Quick Reaction Podcast is a media project by Phoenix, the Main Unmanned Systems Department of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and the second most effective unit within the Unmanned Systems Forces.

In this war, Phoenix operates like a Formula 1 team: hundreds of specialists contribute their expertise to the outcome, while the drone operator delivers the final stroke.

This video podcast explores the technological side of modern warfare and the people behind it. The creators demonstrate that war is not only about loss, but also about engineering, shared experience, endurance, and human lives.

The show is a calm, grounded conversation with unit members who were civilians just yesterday and are now driving meaningful progress toward victory—delivered without cheap pathos, heavy drama, or shock content.

Challenge

The main challenge was finding balance: building a sonic bridge between high-stakes military reality and a civilian audience.

Driven by the idea of quiet confidence and expertise, our initial iterations leaned toward a blend of Tech-Chill and Neo-Soul. However, this broke the mold a bit too far. As one team member on the client side remarked, the track felt “a lot more Orleans than Donbas.” 🙃

That feedback gave us our brief: reinvent the musical language while staying true to our core message—avoiding generic military clichés, forced drama, and heavy, aggressive stomps.

That search led us straight to “warm industrial,” which immediately felt more authentic, distinctive, and resonant.

Sound concept

The sonic identity for the Quick Reaction Podcast needed to serve core communication goals:

• strengthen unit recognition and build a forward-looking image;
• show that striking combat footage is only the tip of an engineering iceberg;
• challenge outdated stereotypes about the military;
• deliver engaging edutainment for both civilians and active-duty personnel.

To accomplish this, we stripped away standard military soundtrack tropes: over-the-top drama, rigid brass lines, harsh synths, and aggressive hybrid-orchestral percussion.

Instead, we drew on key elements of industrial music—an overdriven electric guitar, a modern tech beat, and prominent synthesizers—and deliberately grounded each element to eliminate hostility:

• Lead guitar: saturated with warm overdrive, yet melodic, expressive, and smooth;
• Synths: sculpted without abrasive harshness, opening up a spacious sense of flight that echoes unmanned flight;
• Percussion: layered with subtle mechanical micro-textures evocative of a Formula 1 pit crew, anchored by a gentle heartbeat pulse reflecting the human core of the unit.

An electric piano rounds out the arrangement, bringing warmth, intellect, and clarity that leaves ample room for the dialogue.
